Ok — on to the news. Many of you may be following story of the craft SpaceShipOne, which travelled over 62 miles above the Earth today. That’s cool and I think it’s pretty exciting to think about the possibilities of commercial space travel. However, as I was reading the media build-up to this event, something struck me as odd. This blurb was in an Associated Press piece covering the flight and the craft’s creator, Burt Rutan:

“Rutan became a household name in 1986 when his lightweight Voyager aircraft made the first nonstop flight around the world without refueling.”

Oh really now?

Well I find that certainly interesting. And by interesting I mean totally and completely made up. I don’t know about the local jargon in your neighborhood, but I really couldn’t tell you the last time I heard someone say “Could you please pass me the Rutan?” or “Honey! We’re out of Rutan again!”. In fact, I’ll even go so far as to say I’ve never ever heard someone say “Rutan” in my household, or anyone else’s for that matter. Is it more of a colloquial thing? Like “Well, I’ll be a Rutan in the desert!” or “Well, for Rutan’s Sakes!”. Where are these households invoking the Rutan? This is what I’d like to know. What have you got to say about that, Associated Press?
