So much really, even though I couldn’t wait to leave it. Its charm increases with time and distance, I think. Even more so now since I only go back maybe 2x per year. As some of you know, I am originally from the Midwest — from a really small town in Indiana. This explains my urban savviness and astute fashion sense. From time to time, my mom will send little care packages that include back copies of the local newspaper. Now… my “town” doesn’t actually have a newspaper, so this is the newspaper for the entire county. It’s funny to read the Washington Post on Sunday and then sit down with coffee on a Monday morning and browse through the “weekly rag”.

Since I’ve been “gone” for a while, I don’t recognize as many names as I used to, but there are still plenty that are familiar. Which is always an interesting time when reading through the Court Reports and the “From Law Enforcement” columns… There really is so much good about a small town and of course a lot that probably isn’t readily understood if you’re not from a small town. This can also lead to some entertainment if you look at it the right way. And with that, I bring you the following clip from one of the police blotter reports:

Investigative Reports: Elizabeth Mershon reported to City Officer McMichael that on August 5, her juvenile neighbors were calling her names and making cow sounds. Mershon advised that she has a protective order against some of the juveniles.

Moo…

Is putting your music player on “shuffle” really random? Some iPod users say no. In a recent story from the New York Times many iPod aficionados claim the player “learns” their preferences, or seeks to sabotage their workouts, parties or even more intimate encounters. Despite the creators’ effort to refute this theory, the Times seems to have come up with several people who aren’t convinced.

Are you an iPod (or similar device) fan? Do you often use the shuffle feature? Do you feel that you can trust your music player to be completely random? These are the pressing issues, folks.

Apparently when it’s “art” … a clear plastic bag of garbage was mistakenly thrown out by a janitor at a London gallery in June. The trash, which was part of a new exhibit, was recovered… but needed to be replaced. In the Reuters report, the big mystery was how much it cost to replace that portion of the exhibit. Somehow I don’t think a bag of trash is that hard to come by.
