It’s hard to believe but “We Are the World” turns 20 today — radio stations around the country (and I assume world) will be playing this tune at scheduled times today in celebration.

“We Are the World,” the pioneering all-star charity anthem that generated millions of dollars for African famine relief 20 years ago, is returning to the world stage — this time to raise money for AIDS and tsunami victims.

The group USA For Africa will reissue the Grammy-winning single recorded by more than 40 superstars — among them Bruce Springsteen, Ray Charles, Diana Ross, Bob Dylan, Bette Midler, Willie Nelson, Michael Jackson (news) and Stevie Wonder — on Feb. 1 as part of a two-disc DVD set.

In addition, hundreds of radio stations around the globe are planning to broadcast the song on Friday at noon Eastern time to mark the 20th anniversary of the recording, organizers said on Monday.

I remember this song and video when it first came out and I distinctly recall being in awe of the fact that so many different people were singing this together. While the message was touching and serious, I couldn’t help but notice and laugh at the varying styles seeming to struggle to not try to steal “the show”. Good times. Listen/Lyrics/Cast

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again — God bless you, Lionel Richie!

These are my confessions… Things I actually say to Jamelah:

[21:34] Caryn: oh by the way
[21:34] Caryn: have you heard that song
[21:34] Caryn: i think it’s by “ciara”
[21:34] Caryn: called i think “one two step”
[21:34] Jamelah: i don’t think so
[21:34] Caryn: it’s all “let me see your one-two step”
[21:34] Jamelah: it was going to come on the radio today after a commercial break, but i got home before the commercial break was over
[21:34] Caryn: and she’s all singing and i think missy elliot is on it
[21:34] Caryn: anyway
[21:35] Caryn: she has this line that says something about blah blah blah i’m so hot and “yes i flaunt it”
[21:35] Caryn: and i swear until today
[21:35] Caryn: i thought she said
[21:35] Caryn: yes i farted
[21:35] Jamelah: hahahahaha
[21:35] Caryn: and the next line goes
[21:35] Caryn: “the goodies make the boys jump on it”
[21:35] Caryn: and i’m like WHOA!
[21:35] Jamelah: hahahah
[21:35] Jamelah: man
[21:36] Caryn: i was like “ok things are out of control”
[21:36] Jamelah: that’s pretty good
[21:37] Caryn: you have to hear it — i’m not totally convinced that’s not what she says

Mmmmhm.
