If You’re Happy and You Know It…

Each Tuesday, many of the fabulous digital music stores put out a newsletter heralding what’s new that week, both newly released items and those seemingly random “recently added” selections. You might think this is because most new releases come out on Tuesdays. But it’s really because just adding one humble “n” results in Tunesday. Sadly, many of these “hot, new” artists and albums are the same ones we’ve already read about elsewhere or have heard about on the radio. So, I decided that I’ll pull my own fast one and pass along my musical recommendations each week. Most of these will likely be items I’ve found online via music blogs or randomly searching through each one of my music programs; but I can’t guarantee there won’t be at least some Wham!, Schoolhouse Rock or Astrud Gilberto in the mix. Let’s get down to it, shall we?

Clap, I Say!

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah: I’m coming a little bit late to the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah party, as I do to many parties … the Brooklyn-based band has been getting a lot of buzz on the indie scene and has made the rounds in various and sundry blogs. As if that weren’t enough, they’ve even been the subject of some fun (and I use that term loosely) at McSweeney’s. But I still like them anyway. In fact I like them a real whole lot — and then some.

I definitely agree with Sam at 3hive when he likens the sound to the Talking Heads and a bit of Radiohead, but I’d also add some Violent Femmes, Pet Shop Boys and B-52s in there. The B-52s really just because I feel like it. The music itself is catchy and drives along at a good clip, while the lyrics and singing seem to somehow confuse and enlighten at the same time. Of course, I’ve always been a sucker for songs you can sing in a part wail/part yodel/part hum. This is #1 in my rotation at the moment and I really recommend you check it out, asap. ASAP!
